#274 Additional VAV terminal unit points and tags for comment

Paul Bergquist Mon 13 Apr 2015

In addition to what has been discussed in the VAV Set points thread, I would like to put these additional points and tags out for comment by the community.

Additional VAV points needed

discharge air flow effective sp
discharge air flow max sp
discharge air flow min sp
discharge air flow maxReheat sp
discharge air flow standby sp
zone air co2 sp

Other additional terminal unit points needed

zone occupancy sensor
statusMode: heating | cooling | reheat | morning warm-up | night purge | etc

Additional VAV equip level tags needed

series
parallel
elecReheat
hotWaterReheat
fanPowered
coolOnly
singleDuct
dualDuct
boilerPlantRef
chillerPlantRef
ductSize
pressureDependent
pressureIndependent

With combinations of these tags any type of VAV terminal unit could be modeled.

discharge air flow effective sp

So the different list of discharge flow setpoints is:

  • min/max
  • effective
  • maxReheat
  • standby

Just to compare that to final zone temp setpoints:

  • effective
  • occ cooling/heating
  • unocc cooling/heating
  • standby cooling/heating

Is it correct that there isn't more symmetry b/w the two? For example do discharge flow have different setpoints have occ vs unocc or cooling vs heating?

occupancy

I think we want to reuse the lighting occupancyIndicator tag? Or would we like to just shorten it to occupancy sensor in both places?

statusMode

I think we need more input to get a comprehensive list with detailed description of each mode.

singleDuct

Paul I talked about the need for this tag to compliment the existing dualDuct and tripleDuct tags. Think we should also annotate AHUs with this tag instead of leaving it as assumed.

ductSize

This would be a Number value - what are imperial and SI units used for this?

I think the other equip level tags are pretty straight forward.

Typically they do not since the flow is driven off the occ/unocc/stanby and cooling/heating modes it is already "baked in".

There is one manufacturer that has one additional - discharge flow min unocc sp, so that it can be reset lower in the unoccupied mode.

occupancy

I think we want to reuse the lighting occupancyIndicator tag? Or would we like to just shorten it to occupancy sensor in both places?

My feeling is that indicator and sensor have two distinct meanings. Indicator is usually the result or output of something like an indicator light vs. sensor which is used for other sensor types. My vote is to use sensor if it is a sensor point for consistency.

stautsMode

I think we need more input to get a comprehensive list with detailed description of each mode.

COOLING Controller is controlling the Cooling mode.

HEATING Controller is controlling the Heating mode.

REHEAT Controller is controlling the Reheating mode.

MORNING WARM- UP The main AHU is supplying warm air.

NIGHT PURGE The main AHU is supplying fresh (100 percent outdoor) air.

PRESSURIZE The box damper is set at Press damper position sp.

DEPRESSURIZE The box damper is set at Depress damper position sp

MANUAL POSITION The box damper is set to manual damper position sp.

all others would be very specific to the manufacturer.

ductSize

This would be a Number value - what are imperial and SI units used for this?

ductSize (area) would be ft² or m²

Paul Bergquist Thu 23 Apr 2015

We should use ductArea in lieu of ductSize. ductSize(diameter) would be the configuration point that the controller would use to calculate ductArea(ft² or m²).

Regarding air flow sp we work with :

* Occupied clg min sp * Occupied clg max sp * Occupied htg min sp * Occupied htg max sp * Unoccupied clg sp * Unoccupied htg sp

The four occupied setpoints are used by ASHRAE in Guideline 36 sequences.

Regarding ductSize

I agree that ductArea is better

Regarding occupancy sensor

I'm not sure of the true meaning of indicator...
