#229 Haystack tag description download?

Stephen Frank Tue 18 Nov 2014

I found the helpful download page, http://project-haystack.org/download, but I didn't see a way to download the entire tag specification with descriptions. Is there an easy way to do that?

There is no simple way to do that today, mostly just because of a lack of a good file format. The source files are written in Trio which is a simple text file with a tag per line and multi-line strings indented two spaces. I just haven't let you download that because we've never documented that format here - but maybe we should go ahead and do it - its the best format for humans to read/write

That might work, yeah. I could probably write a quick script to transform Trio into something else that others here would be more comfortable using and editing.

(Background: we're in the process of defining an expanded tag dictionary to serve as an NREL internal standard. Depending on the expected utility of the tags we define, we may propose some back for inclusion in the Haystack standard.)

I think markdown would be a good choice as the output for such a script. It would be really great if the script were freely available too.

Since Axon (SkySpark's scripting language) supports Trio, I can use that to extract the descriptions into something else (e.g. an Excel table). I tested this and it works. However, I'm not sure it would be generally useful (as it currently is) because my script doesn't preserve line breaks or do formatting conversion (e.g. to markdown). Some manual editing is therefore still necessary. Also, not sure how many people on this forum are Axon programmers so I'm not sure how helpful it would be to share here.
